TOPIC: RESTITUTION IS STILL REQUIRED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
TEXT: Acts 23:1-5
KEY VERSE: Ecclesiastes 3:15, “That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
Some pastors teach and many believe that Restitution is no longer required in the New Testament church once you have repented and confessed your sins to God. This is contrary to scripture which says in Ecclesiastes 3:15, “That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past. Again the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:10, “We shall all appear before the judgment seat of God, who will judge all men without partiality and reward every man according to his or deeds in the mortal body while on earth. So, if you will be judged by your past, why would somebody say that restitution is no longer required simply because you have confessed your sin to God.
Our dual responsibility of love towards God and man (Matthew 22:37-40) implies that we owe responsibility of seeking forgiveness of sins not only from God but also from man. When you repent and confess your sin to God, God will forgive but you also have to reconcile with the person that was hurt by your offence. The person was grieved by your wrongdoing and God had noted it. To keep peace with all men is part of holiness (Hebrews 12:14). Until you make peace with the person you offended, he may still be having grievances against you. Restitution is righting the wrong you have done against another person in order to clear all guilt. Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. There are many instances of restitution in the New Testament, which confirm that restitution is still necessary. In Acts 23:4 Paul did immediate restitution to the high priest; Zacchaeus offered to do restitution after conversion (Luke 19:8); Paul offered restitution over converted Onesimus (Philemon 1:18).
Thought for the day: Restitution is necessary for your sanctification.
Song for the day: Purify me, Sanctify me, Purify me O Lord (2x)..
Bible reading for the day:
