TOPIC: SCRIPTURAL INSTRUCTIONS AGAINST DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE
TEXT: Mark 10:11-12
KEY VERSE: Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
True Christian marriage binds a man to his wife and a woman to her husband for life. There can be no remarriage to another person as long as the marriage partner is alive, however sick or sinful. Church, sickness, barrenness, tradition, and parents have no power over God’s word. Romans 7:2, 3: 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Also 1Corinthians 7:10-11’
Divorce and remarriage is accepted on the ground of fornication, when one of the partners in marriage becomes unfaithful to God and to the marriage partner after engagement, but before the marital union is solemnized. In that case, the engaged partner has lost relationship with God due to fornication. Binding marriage engagement was a custom among the Jews (Matthew 5:31, 32). A typical example is the case of Joseph and Mary in Matthew 1:18-25. They were only engaged but the marriage had not yet been solemnized, Joseph suspected fornication, not adultery.
Jesus practically demonstrated that when marital union has been consummated, unfaithfulness resulting from it is adultery, which is equated to every other sin committed in marriage. John 8:7: So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone on her. If adultery can cause divorce and remarriage, then every other sin in the marriage can also lead to divorce (read John 8:1-12). If God has forgiven the believer all sins, including all forms of fornication and adultery indulged in as a sinner, He expects the believer to forgive his fellow men and women, all sins including adultery also. Ignorance of the truth of scripture has given rise to divorce and re-marriage, even among professed believers and ministers of the gospel.
Thought for the day: Marriage is a divine institution no man can tamper with and go scot-free.
Song for the day: I am ready to obey your word (2x) I am ready to obey, the living word of God
