DO NOT FOLLOW THE CROWD, THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT – PART 2
May Tuesday 22nd
Text: Isaiah 55:6-9
Key Verse: Proverbs 10:29 The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
The natural inclination of man is to follow the way of the multitude even though this is contrary to the way of God. You see people lie, you join them in lying; you see people embezzle government money, you too begin to see it as the only way to get rich; you see your peers commit fornication and you develop appetite for it too. Why is this so? What does the bible teach?
1. Some follow the crowd because they want to belong or conform to societal or group norm. This explains why prostitute dressing and adornment is a common phenomenon among women today. Bible specifically warns against being conformed to the pattern of the world in order to live in the perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
2. Some follow the crowd because they are afraid of criticism by friends and relatives. They don’t want to be tagged “old school.” Conformity to the world is adultery. James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
3. Some follow the crowd because they have no idea of what is right or wrong. They simply assume what others are doing is right and follow suit. Ignorance does not excuse sin. That’s why it is necessary to diligently seek the truth of God and walk in it. Psalm 25:4-5 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
4. Some follow the crowd because they see some people as role models who they can emulate or pattern their lives after. People love to pattern their lives after celebrities unmindful of the fact that such celebrities may be living a negative or immoral lifestyle. Our role model is Jesus and those who pattern their lives after Him. 1 Corinthians 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
5. But mostly, people follow the crowd because they think the majority cannot be wrong. They believe that the opinion of the majority is always where the truth is, so they take sides with the multitudes. This is a wrong judgment. In truth, the majority are often wrong because the way of God is not the way of man. Isaiah 55:8, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”
Thought for the day: Make the Word of God your standard of living.
Song for the day: When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word
Bible reading for the day: 1 Chronicles 6-7; John 8:21-36
