TOPIC: WHY YOU MUST PAY YOUR TITHE REGULARLY
TEXT: Malachi 3:6-11
KEY VERSE: Malachi 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
The believer needs to pay tithes as commanded by God. The payment of tithes has been an old practice of mankind in the course of righteousness. I believe the payment of tithes must have dated back to early history of man before the destruction of the world by water. This practice was innate in those who feared God. They knew by intuition that God had His own portion to be given to Him just as citizens are obliged to pay tax in their country of residence. By the way, why do you have to pay tax? You pay tax because of the services the country of your residence is rendering to you. The country provides for you the opportunity to work, they provide security and protection, they provide good roads, electricity and other social amenities that create conducive environment for you to work and live. For these reasons, you need to continue to pay your tax to support their efforts.
God has also created a world in which you live, you work, you have your earnings and enjoy His general providence in rain, sunshine, fresh air and other good things of life. In appreciation of God’s favour and in support His programme of evangelism on earth, God also expects you to give 10% of your earned income and profits to Him as tithe. This has existed from the beginning of creation and was always paid by righteous people; although we cannot specifically say when it began. We know that Abraham did it naturally, which is an indication that it has been there; otherwise, he would not have found it necessary to do so. Abraham paid tithe to the priest, Melchizedek, the man of God, who represented God. Also, Jacob told God, “If You take me to where I am going and bring me back safely, I will give you back the tenth of all that I gather, cattle, sheep, everything.” Unarguably, tithe payment was before the law just as restitution was before the law. If the coming of Jesus Christ abolished some aspects of Moses law, it could not have affected these ones because they were already in practice before the law was given to Moses. Therefore, whoever fails to pay tithe is robbing God and places himself or herself under a divine curse and a closed heaven.
Thought for the day: Pay your tithe to God just as you pay your tax to government.
Song for the day: Give, it shall be given unto you, good measure…….
Bible reading for the day:
Job 31-32; Acts 13:1-23
