TOPIC: WHAT NOT TO DO AGAINST WIDOWS 

TEXT: JEREMIAH 7:5-7
5. For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;
6. If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7. Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.

KEY VERSE: MATTHEW 23:14. “Woe unto you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites!

For ye devour widow’s houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: Therefore, ye shall receive the greater damnation. To the children of Israel in the Old Testament, God gave commandments on what they should not do to the widows. The same obtains in our day: 

God prohibits us from doing evil against widows; of course, this warning concerns the true and faithful widows. Some widows involve themselves in evil life and practice and must reap what they sow. The Lord is warning men not to pervert the widows for their bodily satisfaction. 

People see the widows as women cheaply available for sex. Hence, they go to corrupt them and defile them before God. Many Christian widows become dead spiritually. Others take undue advantage over the widows in many areas. The Christian widow must resist evil firmly.

There are people that follow ungodly and have and tradition to oppress the widow by denying her the late husband’s benefits, savings or property. They carry the wealth of her late husband away for themselves and leave little or nothing at all for the widow and her children in the name of culture, such an ungodly culture. This is an oppression. 

Some will take over the widow’s personal property; they deny them their rights. This must not happen in the house of God. Believer’s, the godly relations and the church must oversee the Christian widows to ensure their welfare. Resist and preach against the culture. 

God uses men to show His love and care towards the widows. Allow yourself to be used by God to bless the widows. Not all widows need financial and material care. Some widows have enough wealth to live on; others are well cared for by their relations, while others are profitably employed. 

But there are widows that need help and these should not be neglected. However, all widows need spiritual care. The church should take responsibility of taking care of the widows spiritually. Pray for the widows that God should give them sufficient grace to practice truth, righteousness and holiness.
