TOPIC: DO NOT MARRY A WOMAN WITHOUT HER PARENTS’ APPROVAL
TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 7:36-38
36. But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
37. Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.
38. So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
KEY VERSE: GENESIS 24:51 “Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD hath spoken”.
A Christian marriage has scriptural pattern that every believer intending to go into it must observe in order to have peace in this life and inherit God’s kingdom at the end of time. A key factor in the Christian’s marriage is the parental consent. Central to the parental consent is the father of the woman who has the right to release her or refuse to release her in marriage.
Do not forcefully marry or carry his daughter away and say, No, I don’t agree with him. He cannot stand on our way. Whether you agree or not the scripture is clear over the matter; and to do so is a rebellion. It is disobedience to God’s commandment. A man tells you, “No, I will not sell this thing”, would you force him to sell it? Certainly not!
In this marriage matter, you can only plead to the father of the woman and try to persuade him to give you his daughter. In the event that he disagrees, take the matter to God in prayer and also plead with others to help you persuade him. That is your responsibility. However, if your persuasion fails, terminate the process of marriage because it might be God resisting the marriage.
Don’t marry by force because the scriptures say “there is he that giveth her hand in marriage or he that does not give her hand in marriage”. You cannot take a man’s daughter without his consent and call it marriage. No!
Marriage has not taken place because the owner of that property (the woman) is not part of that arrangement. Even if he is dead, his relations can stand in for him. The uncles can take over. There must be somebody who is in the position of the head of the family that can stand in and take decision over such matter.
Thought for the day: Make sure you marry in the right way, for your soul’s sake.
Song for the day: Your marriage shall be a blessing, your children surround the table.
Bible reading for the day: Ecclesiastes 9-12
