Services Rendered On Sunday
Tuesday 9th June
Text: Matthew 12:1-14
Key Verse: Exodus 20:8.
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Service rendered on Sundays, means duties or works done on Sunday. Jesus and His disciples were going somewhere and passed through somebody’s farm and began to pluck the ears of the corn to eat, because they were hungry, the pharisees were not happy with them, because they plucked the ear of the corn on Sabbath day, which is like working on the Sabbath day. They had no problem with entering the man’s farm to pluck the corn, because the law covered it at that time. It was allowed among the Jews. But this is not practicable among us because we are in heterogenous society. We are in a community of different cultures and laws binding us. The pharisees were not happy with the disciples of Jesus for plucking the corn on the Sabbath day, the day of rest and worship which no activities should be done. They brought the matter to Jesus on the Sabbath day, that the disciples didn’t honour the Sabbath day and He did not question them.
It is like a child who came home with hunger, but the food that was available belonged to his father, “should we respect food for father and allow the child to perish with hunger? Or we trust father will understand when he comes to know that the child was hungry and has eaten his food.” Do we honour the Sabbath day more than God and allow the work of God to suffer, which means God has to stand still on the Sabbath day. For example, we have a law in our country, that, if you are driving, you should keep to right, but our police men, if they are pursuing somebody, a criminal, they do not obey that law, but they can follow anywhere to achieve what they want to achieve. That shows that they make the law for orderliness, but the law they make should not stop them from doing their work. And therefore, services rendered to God and to humanity on Sunday is not sinful as long as it is not for personal gain. for example, medical workers who are working in the hospital to save life, and our security men/women who are working to protect lives and properties on Sundays, are not sinning.
