TOPIC: DISCIPLINE FOR YOUR SUCCESS IN LIFE
TEXT: 2 TIMOTHY 2:3-5
3. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
4. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
5. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
KEY VERSE: EPHESIANS 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Do not entangle yourself in affairs that have no contribution to your spiritual life, that will not help you achieve your goal in Christ. It could be in conversation. If while talking with somebody you discover that it is taking too long, you can decide to stop. By so doing, you are cultivating the art of self-discipline.
The time you saved will play well on your spiritual life. Instead of spending time in vain visitation, you can decide not to go. Restrict yourself on places to go and not to go, journeys to make and not to make. This is personal discipline; bringing the excesses to bear on spirituality.
Avoid things you would have wasted your life on without value, you by restricting yourself from them. It is like a man that wants to use money for something vital and so refuses to use his money to buy common things. Even cutting down on what to eat to control his expenses. He needs money to do something vital and if he uses up all the money to buy unnecessary things like clothes, chocolates, he will not have enough money for essential things. This is the art of discipline.
In those days, my father told me that whenever he went to a restaurant, he would purposely not buy meat, because he felt he did not want to waste the money. He had children to take care of and if he asked the restaurant to serve him meat, and other things, he would not have enough money for vital needs. Thus, he would decide to give his stomach just what was sufficient for it. This is discipline.
Now you want to go to heaven; the Bible says you must learn how to discipline your life so that you can have ample time to work on yourself for heaven. The Christian life is compared to a soldier. We are told the various kinds of drills the soldiers go through. If you are a soldier or have stayed with one, you will understand how they drill them. Even when the time does not call for it, the soldier man does it by himself, because he wants to have the proper shape and fitting. He wants to be active and combat ready. This is required in Christianity. Discipline yourself.
