Meaning of Burden
Tuesday April 2nd
Text: Nehemiah 1: I - 5
Key verse:
Lamentation 1:16 For these things I weep: mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
Nehemiah was from the tribe of Judah and was a lover of his nation. He was a cupbearer to the king of Persia, a great position indeed. Some men came from Jerusalem and he inquired of the condition of the Jews in Jerusalem and of the city. They told him that the remnant left of the captivity there in the province were in great affliction and reproach. They were suffering. They were despised. Their dignity was gone in the sight of their neighboring nations. The wall of Jerusalem also was broken down and the gates thereof burnt with fire. We have lost our image. We have lost our dignity. We are being despised.
When Nehemiah heard this, burden immediately filled his heart. Their reply triggered a great burden in Nehemiah; he felt the pain. What is burden? It is a hard situation in which a man is troubled, disturbed and seriously concerned over adversities, problem or pain in himself or in someone else. Effects of burden include the following: You are in pain; you are disturbed; it takes away laughter from you; you are filled and in a state of unrest because of what you have seen or what you have heard, because of the situation you find yourself in.
From our key verse, you see this man in pain, in sorrow and weeping because the enemy had prevailed over his children. The children are desolate. The children are in great reproach. The children are in great distress. It disturbed him so tears were running out of his eyes because of the situation. This is a burden. So, you could see the burden in the heart of Nehemiah. The pitiable state of the world should create burden in the hearts of all believers, considering that the vast majority of humanity are doomed and in dire need of Christ’s salvation and holiness.
