TOPIC: REASONS FOR RESTITUTION 3 – TO REMOVE GUILTY CONSCIENCE
TEXT: Leviticus 6:1-5
KEY VERSE: Acts 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
Another reason for restitution is because it is required to remove your feeling of guilt. Guilt is something that haunts a person. If you have done something wrong, guilt will haunt your conscience. If you don’t get rid of it by doing your restitution, you will continue to feel disturbed. You will be guilt-ridden in everything you do and will begin to think, “Are people aware that this is what I did?” It will also create a morbid fear in you because the guilty are always afraid. So, restitution is required to remove your feeling of fear, guilt and condemnation. Sometimes, the Lord will bring up a conviction on you on an evil you did in the past. Your peace will cease and a sense of condemnation and guilt will cover you once in a while. This does not point to any sin you commit now but intended to correct a wrongful act done by you in your past life, known or unknown to others. So, that guilt will continue to haunt you until you settle it. Year after year (maybe ten or twenty years now) that particular matter keeps coming up, the matter persists and is still coming up. Do your restitution so that the guilt will leave you and that matter will die forever.
One of our brothers said that in an attempt to do restitution and free his conscience from guilt, he was almost made to commit another sin. According to him, he told the government sub-treasurer that he wanted to return the money he acquired fraudulently while in Government. The sub-treasurer told him that he should simply say that the money was wrongly paid to him so he could prepare a voucher stating that it was an over payment. But our brother refused and said, “I will be committing another sin by lying. It is like jumping from frying pan to fire. Why can you not say that I took this money fraudulently so that I can be free of guilt?” To the secular society, it is not necessary. What is preached in the churches outside there is “Don’t worry, grace has covered it. Once you are saved, you are forever saved. God has forgiven you all your sins so no restitution is necessary.” But that is not true. It runs contrary to the Scripture. You must confess it to remove the guilt from you, except of course your conscience is totally dead.
Thought for the day: Do your restitution and live in clear conscience toward God and man.
Song for the day: Would you be free from the burden of sin, there is power…
Bible reading for the day: 2 Kings 6-8; John 4:31-54
