TOPIC: AVOID MISUSE OF ANOINTING OIL
OCTOBER Sunday 7th
TEXT: Leviticus 10: 1-5
KEY VERSE: Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. 1 John 5: 21
QUESTION: I am perplexed by the way anointing oil is generally used by many churches. I understand from scriptures from the book of Exodus 30:23 down, that it was mentioned. Secondly, what is the basis for the use of mantles? In the Acts of apostles, we are made to understand that aprons and handkerchiefs were being taken from the body of Apostle Paul for the healing of the sick.
ANSWER: Concerning anointing oil, the scripture you quoted says, see that nobody makes anything of this like. That anointing oil was made specifically to anoint Aaron and his children and the instruments of the tabernacle. It didn’t go beyond that. In fact it was not the anointing oil used to anoint kings. So, the use was restricted to the tabernacle. It was the anointing oil used for normal rubbing on the body, it was not the anointing oil used for healing, as a healing balm. “See that in the whole Israel nobody makes the like” because God dictated the items that should come to constitute it. Anointing Oil was never used to anoint any prophet in Israel, it was not; Moses was not anointed with oil. Is there a record? No. Joshua took over from him, was he anointed with oil? No. Anointing oil was not used. All the prophets, even Samuel himself, he use it over Saul for Kingship. Samuel was not anointed with oil. Come back to all the prophets of old, check it: Jeremiah, Elijah and Elisha. When Elisha was taking over from Elijah, was he anointed with oil? No.
All through the Old Testament no prophet was anointed with oil. Who then was anointed with oil? It was the kings. Why? The Prophets were chosen by the Holy Ghost. The Bible says “Prophets spake as they were moved of the Holy Ghost”. As they were moved, and since the Holy Ghost has come upon them they didn’t need anointing oil. Because anointing oil as was put upon the priests was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The priest office was a natural succession that because your father is a priest you also can be a priest, but the office of a prophet was not a natural succession. It is whomever the Holy Spirit chooses as a prophet and since the Holy Spirit has come upon the believers, when the main person has come the shadow is no more required. So check up all the Old Testament, no prophet was anointed with oil. Again there was no instance in which the church or the Temple or the prophets anointed any person with oil for the purpose of praying for Him in the Old Testament. Was there any case? Because you were sick or because you wanted breakthrough, you wanted anything, there was no case like that.
