TOPIC: CLARIFICATION ON USE OF ANOINTING OIL
OCTOBER Saturday 13th
TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 5: 17-22
KEY VERSE: Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 1 Thessalonians 5: 21
When Elisha was to decree that the Shunamite woman will have a child, did He anoint the woman with oil? No. When the woman’s child died did Elisha used oil to bring the woman’s child back to life? Did Elijah use oil to bring the son of the widow of Zarephath back to life? Which means the way the anointing oil is used in our time is even strange to the Old Testament? The anointing oil in the Old Testament was used as a healing balm, commonly used by everybody; you have it in your house as we have liniments in our houses, in case any thing may happen you want to rub it, you are feeling cold you rub it, you have a fracture or something is swollen. So they have it as a balm, as a first aid in the family. Jesus told us a story of the good Samaritan; “A man fell among thieves on his way from Jerusalem to Jericho, then, there came a Good Samaritan by that way; when he saw him, he went to him, he poured oil and wine upon his wounds for the purpose of purifying; wine to cleanse, oil as a first aid; a healing balm to soothe that place. The Good Samaritan travelled with it in common possession for this purpose, this first aid business. That’s what happened in the Old Testament.
Now come to the New Testament, under the ministry of Jesus. Did we see Jesus use anointing oil on anybody? No. When He was even sending His disciples to go and preach and heal, did He give them bottles of anointing oil? NO! There was no record. In mark 6:12, they anointed people with oil which means it was in common possession as I told you, they could have gotten this oil from the houses of those people as first aid. “They anointed some people with oil and healed them”. Did they heal them with oil or the name of Jesus?
In the whole of the Acts of apostles, with the diverse healings and miracles that took place there, did you hear of account of oil there? No. Now come to the ministry of Paul the apostle, which the Lord raised up, blessed and anointed. Did we hear Paul talk about anointing oil? No. It was mentioned only once in the book of James, “Is any sick among you, let him call the elders, which means your case is heavy, else you should have gone to the elders; but you are now to call for the elders. You call because even in Jesus time there were issues that they called Him to their house, which means they were heavy issues. Is that not so? There were heavy issues that they called Him to the house, otherwise the sick were brought to Him. But in some heavy cases; “my daughter is even now dead”, “My servant is laying at home grievously tormented, can you come and healed him?”
Thought for the day: Did we see Jesus use anointing oil on anybody?
Song for the day: Anointing breaks the yoke
