TOPIC: CAUTION ON USE OF MUSICAL BAND DURING WORSHIP
NOVEMBER Friday 9th
TEXT: Psalm 150: 1-6
KEY VERSE: Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Psalm 150: 1
QUESTION: Is it necessary to use music band in the church? I observe that the congregations no longer clap hands but are dancing worldly dance, as they are using all these worldly songs and these new songs are now replacing the old time songs. I feel carnal when I see the band in the church playing.
ANSWER: Get our sister very well: Should we use the music band, the guitar, drums in the church? She has seen the negative effect in the church. They have turned worship to an emotional thing. People now dance and the sinners who come to church, who are supposed to be sober and repent, instead they dance and laugh. They come, laugh and dance and the conviction gets lost, so when message comes, they are no more convicted. So what do we do? Do we remove the band? Well, that is an individual decision. The whole thing can be employed if the right approach is given to it; if the right play is given to it; if the right songs are sung in solemnity of worship; if it flows naturally to bless the gospel of Christ; because music was used in the Old Testament time. Elisha said, play the music for me and he got inspiration to prophecy.
God is not against music, but when it is used in the spirit of the world, it is evil. In fact many people Jesus Christ appeared to in our day have talked about Jesus’ lamentation on the way music is used in our churches today. He doesn’t receive that type of praise and worship because you are not responding with your heart, it is your body that is responding. The words of the songs are not even heard. But it is the words that are spirit and life. It is the word that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing; but now, the words that are supposed to give life are not even heard. It is the flesh that dominates, so you have no blessing, no benefits. Let the music change, let the approach change. Those who feel that they cannot control their people anymore should discard it. That will be wisdom. You know some of these music boys as we preach from place to place, they constitute nuisance to meetings. They play music for everything; they play music for announcement; they play music for prayer and they do not pray. It is destroying the solemnity of worship, turning everything to carnal pleasure.
