Demas The Backslider 

Wednesday 20th August

TEXT: 2 Timothy 4: 9 - 12
Key verse: 2 Timothy 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica:
Demas! You need to be there when he gave his life to Jesus. You need to be there when he submitted to the leadership of Paul. The zeal he played under Paul showing others that I have discovered a treasure. But what happened to Demas after some time? I told you of man. That Jesus knew man. He would not commission man immediately until He has tried and tested him because He knew what was in man. He will say hosanna, blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord. He will turn again and say crucify him. We have no king but Caesar. He knows man. What happened to Demas? What did Paul do to Demas that he didn’t do to the other people? Go and meet with Demas he will tell you what he will call the secret of Apostle and things you have never heard, Demas will recount those things for you in the tongue of lie and make you believe that it is the truth of God. He will tell you and give you clear reason why he turned away from Paul. But here is the life of Paul exposed to us. Here are other workers under Paul exposed to us for all this generation. What can you study in the life of Paul that Demas alone knew and left him? It is sin.
Demas forsook Paul because of his love for the things of this world. He chose the mundane things of this world at the expense of his eternal soul. Paul described it, having loved this present world; the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. Demas loved pleasure, money, prestige and greatness so he left. Are these things not laying pressure on you brother, putting you off that even now you are not regularly coming to fellowship? In fact, your thought is to come and tell your leader that he should remove you from leadership because you have gotten a vision of what to do. You are not aware it means forsaking the Lord. You are not aware you are backsliding away. You are not aware you are behaving according to human nature. Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots?
