TOPIC: SANCTIFICATION COMES AFTER SALVATION
TEXT: PSALM 51: 1-3
SATURDAY JUNE 10TH
KEY VERSE: Psalm 51: 6 “Behold thou desirest truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part thou shall make me to know wisdom”
Note that there are two types of sins: The actual sins which you are responsible for and the nature of sin that is inherited from Adam. These can be seen clearly from the prayer of David for forgiveness, restoration, and inward cleansing. Psalm 51: 1 “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions”. This means the transgressions are many. One of the transgressions was the immoral act David committed. Another one was that he sent to kill Uriah. These are actual sins and he is asking God for forgiveness, not sanctification. The sinner and the backslider are to come to God for forgiveness.
Sanctification comes after you have been forgiven and have become a believer. It is then you take your heart back to God for sanctification. David goes further to tell us about the second kind of sin. This type of sin requires sanctification. Lord, I backslid and sinned, restore me again. Forgive me, Lord, purge me again. He has gone further to ask for sanctification. In verse 5, he introduced the second kind of sin. Psalm 51: 5 “Behold I was sharpened in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceived me.”
David mentioned these sins. This was the same thing Jesus prayed for even after his disciples have been with him for three and half years, he said they were no more of the world because they have received the word of God, he said sanctified them because of this Adamic nature which David made reference to that gives rise to sin, actual and committed sin. In salvation, you are empowered against committed sin, but you can sin once in a while. You can fall and wonder what happened to you. There is an inner tension within which is also called the body of sin. God desires truth right inside. He wants to see through you but this inbred sin in man is a pollution that must be taken away.
