TOPIC: IS IT RIGHT FOR A CHRISTIAN TO BORROW? (Part 1)
TEXT: Matthew 18: 23-27
23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 The servant, therefore, fell, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
KEY VERSE: Psalm 37: 21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth
From our key verse, the scripture does not say that we should not borrow but that we should pay when we borrow. Whether borrowed from the bank or an individual, learn to pay when you borrow. The sin is not in the borrowing but in not paying back again. You are considered a wicked man when you borrow and do not pay back again.
From our text, we can see how important it is to pay back debts. Even if you don’t have the cash to pay, you should sell your property to pay what you owe, since the Bible says, “Owe no man anything.” God is a righteous Judge and knows whether truly you don’t have or whether you deliberately do not want to pay back what you borrowed.
From verse 26: The servant, therefore, fell, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
The servant fell convicted of his sin. He worshipped him or did obeisance to show him honour and thereby display humility.
He said, “Lord have patience with me...” showing language of appeal and humility – “Please pipe down your heart and be patient with me and I will pay thee all.” This shows a language of hope and speaks of a person still mindful to pay. It is not that he is wicked but that he does not have. “Just be patient with me, as I have I will pay you all.”
That is what you should do with your creditor. Speak the language of peace and show humility. This is different from the rude or hostile attitude...” how much is even the money that you are disturbing me about? Can’t you ever forgive me?” That is rude language. If you force that man to forgive you God has not forgiven you because you were not convicted. You didn’t discover the wrong you did.
Thought for the day: Don’t be proud of your creditor.
Song for the day: Give me the grace to follow, abundant grace to follow......
