In today’s devotional text, we understand that Cornelius was a devout, generous and prayerful man, who feared God with all his household, yet he was ignorant of what he needed to do to get his name into the Book of Life and save himself and his family from eternal damnation. Although he was committed to the worship of God, Cornelius’ understanding of God’s requirement for salvation from sin and gaining eternal life was very shallow and based on observance of the Old Testament laws. He was not aware that justification was no more by law, but by faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:20-22).
